The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, the drug in the Wegovy and Ozempic injections, in a tablet taken once a day. The FDA approved it in December 2025 for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related health condition, and for lowering cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight. You start at 1.5 mg a day and step up every 30 days, through 4 mg and 9 mg, to 25 mg a day from day 91. It is taken every morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water, followed by 30 minutes without food, drink or other pills. In its main trial, people lost 13.6% of their body weight on average over 64 weeks, against 2.2% on placebo. It requires a prescription.

Key takeaways#

  • What it is: semaglutide tablets (Wegovy) at 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg, approved by the FDA in December 2025 for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction.
  • How to take it: once daily in the morning, on an empty stomach, with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, swallowed whole; then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines.
  • How well it works: 13.6% average weight loss at 64 weeks against 2.2% on placebo in OASIS 4, in adults without diabetes.
  • Pill or injection: the label lets patients switch between the 25 mg tablet and the 2.4 mg weekly injection; the choice is mostly about daily routine versus a weekly shot.
  • The other pill: Foundayo (orforglipron), approved April 2026, is a non-peptide GLP-1 tablet with no food or water rules.
  • Who can get it: adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition, on a prescription.

How the Wegovy pill works#

Semaglutide copies GLP-1, a gut hormone released after eating. It slows stomach emptying, reduces appetite through receptors in the brain, and improves insulin release after meals. The tablet contains the same molecule as the injection, with an absorption enhancer that lets a small fraction of it cross the stomach wall. Because so little is absorbed, the tablet doses are much larger than the injection doses: 25 mg a day by mouth against 2.4 mg a week by injection. That difference in scale is explained in detail in the Wegovy pill dosage chart, which also gives the full 30-day ladder.

How to take the Wegovy pill#

The Wegovy label sets the rules, and they matter more than with most pills, because food and other drinks sharply cut how much semaglutide is absorbed:

  1. Take one tablet once a day, in the morning on an empty stomach.
  2. Swallow it whole with up to 4 ounces (120 mL) of plain water. No coffee, juice or other liquids.
  3. Do not split, crush, chew or dissolve it.
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines.

The best time of day is therefore on waking, before breakfast and before any morning medications. The same routine applies at every dose.

The 30-minute wait after each tablet is the part of the routine that most affects how much drug is absorbed.

How well it works, and how long it takes#

The tablet's approval rests on OASIS 4, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It randomized 307 adults with obesity or overweight and without diabetes to 25 mg tablets or placebo, alongside lifestyle support. At 64 weeks, average weight loss was 13.6% on the tablet against 2.2% on placebo.

How long until it works depends on what "works" means. Some people notice appetite changes during the first weeks, but the first three months are dose escalation: the 25 mg maintenance dose is reached only on day 91, and the lower doses exist mainly to let the stomach adjust. The trial's main measurement was taken at 64 weeks. Research suggests judging the effect over months, not weeks.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?#

The approval trials compared each form with placebo, not with each other, so the honest answer comes from the label and the separate trials. The label treats the 25 mg tablet and the 2.4 mg weekly injection as alternatives: a patient on the 2.4 mg injection can start 25 mg tablets a week after the last shot, and a patient on tablets can move to the injection the day after the last tablet. In their own trials, the tablet gave 13.6% weight loss at 64 weeks (OASIS 4) and the injection 14.9% at 68 weeks (STEP 1), in different populations, so the numbers are close but not directly comparable. For most people the decision is practical: a daily tablet with strict morning timing, or a weekly injection with no food rules. The injection side is covered in the Wegovy guide.

Wegovy pill vs Foundayo, the other weight-loss pill#

The Wegovy pill is no longer the only GLP-1 tablet approved for weight loss. On April 1, 2026 the FDA approved Foundayo (orforglipron, Eli Lilly) for the same population: adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition. The two differ in ways that matter day to day:

  • Molecule. The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, a peptide. Foundayo is a small-molecule, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist.
  • Routine. The Wegovy pill needs an empty stomach, a few sips of water and a 30-minute wait. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions.
  • Dose ladder. Foundayo starts at 0.8 mg daily, rises to 2.5 mg and then 5.5 mg at 30-day intervals, and can go to 9, 14.5 or 17.2 mg depending on response and tolerability. Its milligram figures have nothing to do with semaglutide's.

No trial has compared the two pills head to head, so which one loses more weight is not settled by direct evidence. For someone who finds the Wegovy pill's morning routine hard to keep, Foundayo removes it.

Side effects and safety#

The side effects are those of semaglutide in any form. In OASIS 4, gastrointestinal adverse events affected 74.0% of people on the tablet against 42.2% on placebo, mostly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, and they are associated with dose increases. The label carries the class boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and contraindicates semaglutide with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. It also warns about pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, and kidney injury from dehydration. The full picture is in Wegovy side effects. Do not combine the pill with any other semaglutide product or GLP-1 drug.

How to get the Wegovy pill#

The Wegovy pill is prescription-only. It is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes. Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket prices vary by plan and change often; the prescriber or pharmacist is the reliable source for a given case. It is a different product from Rybelsus, the lower-dose semaglutide tablet for type 2 diabetes, which is not approved for weight loss (see Rybelsus for weight loss). Klarovel does not sell, prescribe or fulfil Wegovy or any other medicine.

The bottom line#

The Wegovy pill brings semaglutide's weight-loss effect to a daily tablet: 13.6% average weight loss at 64 weeks in its trial, close to what the injection achieves in its own. The trade is a strict morning routine in exchange for no needles. Studies have shown that much of the weight lost on semaglutide tends to return after stopping, which is why it is prescribed as long-term treatment rather than a course. Klarovel's disclosures explain how the platform is funded.
